Cleaners seek pay rise to $14.62 an hour

About 2000 commercial cleaners are taking protest action over what they describe as poverty pay conditions.

The majority of cleaners, who are members of the Service and Food Workers Union, earn $12.55 an hour - five cents above the minimum wage.

They are seeking an increase to $14.62 to give them pay parity with cleaners in public hospitals and those directly employed by schools.

The union's lead organiser, Fala Haulangi, says after the rounds of negotiations workers have been offered an increase of 25 cents an hour, which she says makes the workers feel insulted and disrespected.

Ms Haulangi says cleaners are wearing stickers while at work on Wednesday which read "we're worth more" and "where's our $14.62?"
