River boarding company suspends operations

7:04 pm on 25 September 2009

The Mad Dog River Boarding company has suspended its operations on the Kawarau River.

The suspension comes a month after the Queenstown company pleaded guilty to failing to take all steps to ensure the safety of British tourist Emily Jordan, who drowned on one of the company's trips last year.

Miss Jordan's family has expressed concern that Mad Dog River Boarding was still operating on the river without having completed a Maritime New Zealand safety audit.

In a statement, Mad Dog River Boarding owner Brad McLeod says he has taken those concerns on board and the company will cease operations until the audit is completed next week.

Mr McLeod says the company will also undertake a peer review by the rafting industry and an independent audit by the Register of Outdoor Safety Auditors.
