Power restored to most homes after snowstorm

Twenty-two properties in Hawke's Bay were still without power on Wednesday night following a freak snowstorm.

About 100 households have been without power in rural Hawke's Bay and Taupo since Sunday after the storm knocked over about 50 power poles.

Lines company Unison said most of the homes had been reconnected on Wednesday afternoon, but bulldozer access was needed to reconnect customers in Waitere and on Pohokura Rd off State Highway 5.

Unison hopes to have all customers reconnected by lunchtime today.

Meanwhile, the Desert Road between Waiouru to Rangipo re-opened on Wednesday.

The snow at the weekend caused havoc, blocking roads and leaving many motorists in the central North Island stranded.

The Transport Agency said there are still wintry conditions on the Desert Road and urged drivers to take care.
