A rahui, or ban, on gang colours being enforced in a small Bay of Plenty town has caused a confrontation at a funeral service.

Ngati Manawa iwi has enforced the ban on violence and the wearing of gang colours following suspicions the deaths of two young men were gang related.

Gang members were on Friday told to remove gang regalia in order to walk on to Rangitahi Marae in Murupara.

Pem Bird of Te Ha o Te Ora says gang members were blocked by people including kaumatua of the marae, to stop them entering the premises.

He says he asked them to remove their gang colours, but they refused and left the site.
