Govt denies clash with IRB over Silver Fern emblem

5:03 pm on 22 October 2009

Rugby World Cup minister Murray McCully denies the Government has clashed with the International Rugby Board over the volunteer uniform for the 2011 tournament.

The Rugby World Cup will be held in New Zealand from 9 September, with the final being played at Eden Park in Auckland on 23 October 2011.

The Government is reported to have insisted that the Silver Fern emblem be on uniforms for the volunteers.

Radio New Zealand has been told that the IRB is concerned about the fern's strong association with the All Blacks.

Mr McCully says the Government has never demanded that the Silver Fern be on the uniforms and says the branding issue will not affect the volunteer programmes.

The IRB has declined to comment on Thursday.
