A 22-year-old mystery has been solved with the positive identification of a body found in West Auckland.

Lino Leger went missing in 1987. His body was found in the Waitakere Ranges last year but police struggled to identify him.

They scanned the national missing person database, created a facial reconstruction and enlisted the help of a forensic dentist to crack the case.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Leger's death.
