A jury at the High Court in Auckland has heard secret recordings of a couple discussing the suspicious death of their 11-week-old baby.

Azees Mohamed is accused of murdering and causing grievous bodily harm to his daughter Tahani who died of her injuries on 1 January last year.

Mr Mohamed is also jointly charged with his wife Tabbasum Mohamed with failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The court was told on Tuesday that, in the days after the baby's death, police put microphones in the family home.

In one excerpt Azees Mohamed is heard exclaiming "Allah, Allah - what have I done?"

In another, Tabbasum Mohamed acknowledges police have strong medical evidence but cannot prove that she or her husband killed their daughter.

The recordings are in Hindi and were transcribed by a police officer who speaks the language.

However, the defence argues the detective is not qualified and has incorrectly translated much of the evidence.
