A new survey on social wellbeing has found key issues for New Zealanders include inadequate income for young people, health problems for the elderly, housing problems and a lack of social contact.

More than 8000 people contributed information to a general social survey by Statistics New Zealand from April 2008 to March 2009.

Social conditions manager Conal Smith says it provides a snapshot of social wellbeing on the eve of the recession.

He says the study covered a variety of topics such as life satisfaction, income and health and housing.

Mr Smith says the results show New Zealand broadly compares with Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom for life satisfaction, health and housing.
