Hundreds of Auckland council staff who work in customer service and community facilities have been told their jobs will be safe in the change to a super city.
The Auckland Transition Agency, which is overseeing the change from eight Auckland councils to one, has released its initial view of how staff will be affected.
It says those in frontline customer positions and in places such as libraries, pools and parks will most likely to be able to keep their jobs and stay in their current locations.
But there are likely to be redundancies in jobs that deal with strategy, policy and planning as the councils combine.
Within those areas, middle managers and administration staff will be most in the firing line.
The Public Service Association, which represents about a third of the council workers, says it always believed frontline jobs would be retained so services would not be affected.
But it says the uncertainty among frontline staff has now been alleviated.
National secretary Richard Wagstaff says it is logical that the frontline jobs stay.
