A church service to remember New Zealand's war dead has been held in Wellington.

The Remembrance Sunday commemoration, previously known as Armistice Day, was attended by the Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand and senior military officials.

The ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral began with a parade of flags carried by servicemen from the Defence Force and police.

In his speech, Sir Anand urged the congregation to remember those who have been injured or lost their lives while serving in the armed forces.

He also made special mention of the 805 personnel who are on peacekeeping missions.

Along with the official commemorations, Remembrance Sunday has been observed in churches throughout the country.
