Icebergs drifting off, but more heading to NZ

Icebergs which came close to New Zealand last week are now unlikely to be visible from the east coast of the South Island, but more are heading this way.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says strong winds have driven the closest icebergs too far to the east, making it improbable they will be seen from the mainland.

However, NIWA oceanographer Mike Williams says there is another flotilla of icebergs near Macquarie Island, 900km south of New Zealand.

"They were sighted there on Sunday from satellites and that's where the ones we've had over the last few weeks came from, so there's every chance that the next batch will also make it through to New Zealand."

Mr Williams says it will be about a fortnight before it is known if these icebergs will come close to the east coast of the South Island, as has happened in 2006 and 1931.
