Police are calling on hosts to be responsible and keep an eye on their guests after a bridesmaid at a wedding near Auckland ran into the bush, sparking a search in the Waitakere Ranges.

The 26-year-old was at a wedding in Huia in Waitakere, west of Auckland, when she left for an unknown reason and headed into thick bush nearby at about 1.30am on Sunday.

A police search and rescue team found the woman safe in the bush about 5.30am, after an extensive search using a helicopter and dogs.

Inspector Shawn Rutene says police had been concerned for the woman's safety because it had been raining and cold and the she was lightly clad, but it was frustrating so many resources had to be used to find her.
