Increase in number of women killed

3:55 pm on 17 December 2009

Campaigners against domestic violence say increasing numbers of women are being killed by their partners and urgent action is needed.

The Roundtable on Violence Against Women says it is difficult to monitor the problem because the police have not issued any statistics on the gender of homicide victims since 2004.

In the five years between 2000-2004, 45 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner, one every five weeks.

RVAW says domestic-related killings have occurred at a rate of one a fortnight in the last two months.

Police were unable to comment on Thursday.
