Helensville rail service ends due to low patronage

9:47 am on 24 December 2009

A new commuter rail service in Auckland runs for the last time on Thursday with low patronage spelling the end for the Helensville train.

Lack of interest meant that each journey was subsidised by ratepayers and taxpayers by $45.

The single weekday return service to the township began in the middle of last year on a trial basis, but attracted less than half the passengers needed to make it viable.

Auckland Regional Transport Authority spent $1.25 million building and improving three rail stations northwest of the city.

Northwestern communities are also served by buses, which reach downtown Auckland quicker than the train

ARTA will consider a shorter extension of western line services to Huapai next year.
