Crown to be in charge of consents until late 2014

Local Government Minister Chris Tremain says there is likely to be a Crown manager in charge of issuing building consents in Christchurch until at least the end of next year.

Christchurch City Council is expected to vote on Thursday to surrender some of its powers to a Government appointee after losing its building consent accreditation.

Mr Tremain says work has already begun to recruit someone to the role and he expects to announce who that is in one week.

Mr Tremain said he is not prepared to lay blame for the problems before he knows more and the manager's first role will be to complete a report into the situation.
