Two companies have been ordered to pay $85,000 in fines and reparation after an employee's foot was cut off in an accident involving a winch last October.

Bream Bay Enterprise Ltd and Genera Ltd were on Wednesday sentenced in Tauranga District Court for breaching the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

Earlier, Bream Bay had admitted it had not ensured employees undertook safe workplace practices.

Genera, the company engaging Bream Bay to employ the workforce, admitted it did not sufficiently monitor Bream Bay to ensure it was discharging its obligations.

Bream Bay was fined $25,000 and ordered to pay $15,000 in reparation and Genera was fined $20,000 and told to pay $25,000 in reparation.
