Windfarm gets resource consent but no plans to build

Genesis Energy has won resource consents for a huge windfarm in northern Wairarapa, but the company has no plans at present to actually build it.

The proposed Castle Hill windfarm is north of Masterton and east of Eketahuna, and the consent would allow 286 turbines of up to 860 megawatts in total.

The consent applications were lodged with the Masterton and Tararua district councils, as well as with the Greater Wellington and Manawatu-Wanganui regional councils in 2011.

The applications were granted but the decision was appealed to the Environment Court by a number of parties, including Genesis Energy.

The company says those issues have been resolved after discussions between the contesting parties. It has 20 years to build the windfarm.
