The Government and SkyCity have signed an agreement authorising the casino operator to build a convention centre in Auckland in return for getting more gaming machines and an extended licence.

Under the agreement signed in Auckland on Friday night, SkyCity can install 220 more pokie machines on its casino floor and its licence, which had been due to expire in 2021, is extended until 2048.

SkyCity is also required to take more steps to deter problem gambling.

Construction of the convention centre is due to begin in 2014 and the facility is scheduled to open in 2017.
