Hundreds of Christchurch properties still without power

7:19 pm on 6 July 2013

About 700 properties in Christchurch are still without power on Sunday night as severe gales are set to pick up again.

Lines company Orion says strong winds brought down power lines on Saturday morning originally cutting power to 9800 properties.

Orion says most of the remaining 700 outages are in the rural area inland from Christchurch city.

MetService forecaster Oliver Druce says the strong wind warnings are still in place in Canterbury, as well as Otago, Southland, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa.

He says while there was a lull in the wind on Saturday afternoon, the gales, possibly reaching 130 kilometres per hour, will pick up again on Sunday night.

Mr Druce says moderate to heavy rain is ongoing in Fiordland and Westland, and warnings remain in place.
