Suicide reporting restrictions to be reviewed

12:56 pm on 11 July 2013

The reporting of suicides will be reviewed by the Law Commission.

Courts Minister Chester Borrows said a recent review of the Coroners Act showed that some restrictions on media reporting of suicides are unclear.

He said reporting on suicides is a delicate subject and that there are strong views as to its benefits and risks.

Mr Borrows said the Law Commission will look at whether the legal restrictions need to be clarified and if relaxing restrictions might help prevent suicides.

The Commission will report by the end of March 2014.
