Police have released the name of a Northland man who died in a fishing accident at the weekend.

He was Mario Openshaw of Whangarei.

Mr Openshaw, 29, was swept off the rocks on Sunday at a fishing spot known as The Gap - at Taiharuru, north of Whangarei.

His brother jumped into rough seas to try to save him and the pair were plucked from the waves by the crew of the Northland Rescue Helicopter but Mr Openshaw could not be revived.

There has been no sign of a 48-year-old fisherman who has not been seen since last week, when he set a net on tidal flats at Motukauri, in north Hokianga.
