Election nominations now open

2:47 pm on 19 July 2013

Nominations open on Friday for local body elections on 12 October.

Candidates intending to stand for regional, district and city councils and for health boards have until 16 August to submit their nominations. That day also marks the deadline for people to enrol to vote in the elections.

Those who fail to enrol by will still be able to vote, but will need to contact their council for a special voting form.

The Electoral Commission says so far, there are 116,000 more people enrolled than at the previous elections in 2010.

It says extra effort has been taken to reminding people in Christchurch to enrol because of the large number of people there displaced by the earthquakes.
