Hospital children's charity box stolen

Two thieves wearing sheets used a wheelchair to steal a charity donation box for sick children at Wellington hospital.

Wellington Hospital & Health Foundation chair Bill Day said the thieves took the perspex donation box was taken from the hospital's atrium about 2am last Saturday.

Mr Day said a wheelchair was used to take the heavy collection box to the back of the hospital, where it was smashed open.

All the notes inside were taken, but most of the coins were behind. The donations would have been used to buy toys for sick children.

The incident was recorded on tape and the police are investigating.
