New open fire places in Taupo houses to be banned

New air pollution measures in Taupo mean open fire places installed in homes after June next year won't be able to be used.

The Waikato Regional Council says two breaches of national air pollution standards in Taupo over the past 12 months has prompted the measure.

It says while the breaches don't necessarily mean air quality is getting worse in the town, the restriction on new open fires is a precautionary measure.

The council says after June next year people will still be able to use existing open fire places and also enclosed fires, such as woodburners.
