Police are investigating a suspicious fire that extensively damaged a vacant red-zoned house in Christchurch.

The River Road property in the suburb of Richmond was well alight when emergency services arrived at 2am on Tuesday.

Police want anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area to contact them.

Meanwhile, fire crews attended other blazes in Otago, including a house fire in Balclutha about 1am on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said people were at the property at Koau Road but were not injured. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

The other fire was in Dunedin at a food bar and restaurant on Rattray Street about 9.30pm on Monday.

Fire safety inspectors will attend all incidents on Tuesday.
