The Problem Gambling Foundation and the Green Party are applauding a move by the Auckland Council to phase out pokies in pubs and clubs.
But they say the Government will undermine that decision if it signs the SkyCity Convention Centre deal.
After a nine-month review, a council committee on Wednesday voted 12 to 1 in favour of a sinking lid policy on poker machines, with no new licenses being issued.
The Problem Gambling Foundation says it is sad the Government wants to foist another 230 pokies on the city as the quid pro quo for a new convention centre.
The Green Party says the 10,000 Auckland people who made submissions against pokies to the council should now tell the Government's Commerce Committee how they feel. Submissions on the International Convention Centre Bill close on 22 August.
