Sea Shepherd is offering a reward of $2000 for information leading to the conviction of the person who killed a New Zealand sea lion on Stewart Island last month.

It is believed the female sea lion was shot with a .22 rifle, in Port Adventure in mid-June.

The group says there are less than 38 breeding females in this country.

The New Zealand sea lion is a protected species under the Marine Mammals Protection Act.
