A professor leading a centenary project to detail New Zealand's involvement in World War I, says early histories glossed over some of the unpleasant details.

The Massey University Foundation has been allocated $500,000 to produce a series of up to 13 volumes on different aspects of World War I.

Professor Glyn Harper says early histories characterised the country's involvement in the Great War as a 'march to triumph', understated casualty figures and omitted or glossed over many mistakes.

Professor Harper is general editor of The Centenary History of New Zealand and the First World War and is writing one of the books in the series.
