Police investigating the death of an Auckland teenager are seeking information about a tasselled leather jacket she owned around the time of her disappearance 20 years ago.

Jane Furlong was last seen on Karangahape Road in May 1993 and her remains were found buried at a Port Waikato beach, about an hour's drive south from Auckland, last year.

Detective Inspector Mark Benefield says the distinctive jacket was bought from a shop in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga and Ms Furlong was frequently seen in it.

The jacket is a patchwork of leather panels of varying shades of brown or tan with tassels on each arm and possibly the back.

Detective Inspector Benefield says it wasn't with Ms Furlong's body when it was discovered and could hold significant clues.

Mr Benefield says police are making significant progress in the case.
