Auckland lawyer struck off for misconduct

A disciplinary tribunal has struck an Auckland lawyer off the roll of barristers and solicitors of the High Court after he admitted to misconduct and breaching regulations.

Edward Errol Johnston was taken before the tribunal by the Law Society after obtaining two payments of $250,000 from clients to buy shares in his company and for a loan to that company to allow him to purchase property.

Law Society president Chris Moore says Mr Johnston didn't arrange for his clients to obtain independent legal advice and instead used the money for his own personal benefit.

Mr Moore says when the clients demanded the money back, he failed to repay them.
