12:11 pm on 30 July 2013

A side street in central Wellington which was closed due to damage from the magnitude 6.5 earthquake last week, is now open again.

Wellington City Council closed Lukes Lane and told nearby residents to evacuate on Thursday night because of fears an elevator shaft that was damaged in the quake, might collapse.

The council has completed work to repair and stabilise the shaft and the street is now open.
