Man admits double killing

5:48 pm on 30 July 2013

A Far North man accused of shooting dead his uncle and aunt has admitted the killings.

Edwin Maheno pleaded guilty in the Kaitaia District Court on Monday to the murders of Ivan and Carmen Maheno on May 19.

The police summary of facts say Mr Maheno was raised by his grandmother in the Pamapuria homestead where the shootings took place.

But she left the home to her son Ivan, and on her death in 2009 the couple and their children moved in with Mr Maheno.

Police said he felt insulted after an argument about domestic chores and walked into his uncle's bedroom with his .22 rifle, shot him twice in the head, and later stomped on his body.

He shot his aunt in the head as she fled the house, and later turned himself in to police in Kaitaia.

Maheno will appear in the High Court in Whangarei on August 15 for a sentencing date.
