Tenants evacuated from apartment building

The Auckland Council is evacuating tenants from a central city apartment building because it has been deemed unsafe.

The Prince Albert building on Albert Street had a routine assessment on Wednesday. Engineers told the council it would need repairs and it should be vacated as a precaution.

About 50 people left the building by Wednesday night and must find alternative accommodation for about 10 days.

The council's building control manager, Ian McCormick, said the engineers found concrete broken away and corroding steel on columns on the ground floor.

Mr McCormick said that raised concerns about the structural integrity of the building, which was built in the 1920s.

Council engineers will meet with the building owners on Thursday to discuss the next course of action.
