Man jailed after Nelson rampage

A Nelson man who tried to steal a plane to fly it into the city's courthouse and then went on a rampage in the city has been jailed for four years.

Travis Doel was arrested at the Nelson Aero Club in March this year after breaking into a Sounds Air plane and trying to start it with a pocket knife.

On the same day, Doel also set fire to two storage buildings and drove into the front window of the Public Trust building.

Crown prosecutor Jackson Webber told the court on Friday that Doel was motivated by his perception of circumstances following his mother's death.

Mr Webber said Doel believed that people were trying to prevent him from getting his inheritance and important items relating to his mother's life.

Doel has also been ordered to pay about 10% of the $550,000 worth of damage he caused.
