Police in Auckland say a family's puppy has been slaughtered during a series of burglaries and home invasions in the suburb of Glen Innes.
They say the 12-week-old labrador puppy was taken out of its crate and killed by an intruder as the family fled to another room.
Acting eastern police district commander, Mark Benefield, says a man discovered at least two young men in his backyard, and when he tried to call the police the men forced their way into the house.
Mr Benefield says it is not yet clear how the puppy was killed but it is undergoing a post mortem.
He says there were two attempted burglaries and a prowler reported in the area about the same time.
