A two-year-old girl has drowned in Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown.
Police responded to a call from a Kelvin Heights mother shortly after midday on Tuesday who said her daughter had wandered off and couldn't be found.
The girl was found face down in the lake a short time later, about 100 metres from where she went missing.
Police and St John ambulance staff attempted CPR, but the child did not regain consciousness.
The family are being supported by family and friends and the girl's name will not be released until all family have been notified.
The matter is now with the coroner.
