A Singaporean man has been arrested for trying to smuggle methamphetamine with an estimated street value of up to $50,000 into New Zealand.

The 38-year-old appeared in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday after he was arrested by Customs officers at Auckland International Airport on Monday night for being in possession of 55 grams of methamphetamine, also known as the drug "P".

Customs says the man, who flew in from Sydney, was found with a small package wrapped in black insulation tape at the bottom of his bag.

It says the man claimed the bag contained salt but drug testing identified the substance as methamphetamine.

The man has been charged with importing a Class A controlled drug.
