Gun safety campaign yields early results

Police in Waikato are seeing positive early results following the launch of a gun safety campaign.

District firearms officer Richard Plas said 10 firearms have been handed in since the beginning of the 'Lock em or Lose em' campaign.

He said the guns came from people who did not have the right licence or no longer wanted the firearms, which have included rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition.

Mr Plas said sporting firearms and high-capacity magazines have been found in some recent searches of rural properties, .

He said these gun-owners could find themselves in trouble with the law because they are illegally converting sporting firearms to military-style semi-automatics.
