Group fights to protect Dunedin surfbreaks

A surfing group has gone to the Environment Court to stop Dunedin's port affecting the waves by dumping dredged soil in the sea.

The Surfbreak Protection Society is appealing against an extension of resource consents allowing the dumping of soil near two nationally protected surfbreaks.

The three-year consents allows Port Otago to dump more soil dredged from Dunedin's shipping channels at Heyward Point near Whareakeake, but less at Aramoana's spit.

The society wants the consents overturned or the waves to be strictly monitored to ensure they are not affected.
