Survey finds 5% of firms putting in quake claim

About 5% of Wellington businesses are lodging insurance claims as a result of last month's series of earthquakes in Cook Strait that shook the capital and Marlborough, a survey has found.

One business has reported more than $100,000 of damage and six estimate damage at between $1000 and $10,000.

However, the survey - by the Wellington Employers Chamber of Commerce - suggests most businesses came off lightly from the 6.5 quake on 21 July.

Of the 117 firms surveyed, only 5% say they will lodge an insurance claim, even though two-thirds say they were affected by the earthquake, with most reporting staff disruption and workplace closures.

More than half said their premises were closed while the building were inspected. A third reported damage to their premises; only three reported damage to stock.

Sixteen companies reported business disruptions costing between $10,000 and $100,000.
