Police say the death of a man whose body was found by the Heathcote River in central Christchurch is not considered suspicious.

The body of Jeff de Moulin, 41, was discovered by a member of the public in the suburb of Woolston at 9am on Friday.

Police say Mr de Moulin had been drinking with his female partner and a man on Thursday, close to where his body was found the following morning at the end of Catherine Street.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer, said the police have now spoken to that man, who they had earlier asked to come forward.

A post-mortem was also completed on Saturday afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Archer had earlier said that the body was found in an unusual position.

He says the death has now been referred to the coroner.
