Police will target speeding drivers on a Marlborough highway that has a history of serious crashes.

From Monday, officers are running a week-long operation on State Highway 1 between Picton and Kaikoura.

In the last five years there have been 11 deaths and 68 people seriously injured in accidents on the road, and a further 263 people have suffered minor injuries. The Transport Agency estimates the social cost of the crashes at almost $120 million.

Marlborough Area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne says speeding drivers have been identified as a major risk on the highway with drivers frequently travelling at speeds well in excess of the legal limit.
