Nutricia 'frustrated' at lack of accurate info

Infant formula manufacturer Nutricia says it has been frustrated at the lack of accurate information available about a contamination scare which has led to a recall of two of its products.

Fonterra revealed on 3 August that 38 tonnes of its whey protein used by other manufacturers, including infant formula, was contaminated with a bacteria that can cause botulism. The whey protein was tainted by a dirty pipe at the dairy company's processing plant in Waikato in May 2012.

On Monday, Nutricia narrowed down potentially affected products to batches of Karicare Stage 1 New Baby Infant Formula and Karicare Gold-plus Stage 2 Follow On Formula, produced between the 21 May and 2 August this year.

Managing director Corine Tap said it has been very difficult to get accurate information and that has frustrated her and her team who have received more than 7000 calls and hundreds of emails from worried parents.

She said she has also been frustrated with inaccurate information being circulated which has caused more stress for parents.

Ms Tap would not say if Nutricia is considering taking legal action against Fonterra, saying her focus at present is getting the product back on the shelves.
