A solo Canadian climber has been rescued after getting stuck on the side of a ravine in Arthur's Pass in the Southern Alps.

The Rescue Coordination Centre picked up a United States-registered personal locator beacon just after noon on Monday and sent a helicopter to Goldney Glacier on the eastern side of Mt Rolleston in the South Island.

Search and rescue mission coordinator Greg Johnston said a member of the cliff rescue team helped winch the woman to safety from the edge of a glacier.

Mr Johnston said she was in an extremely precarious position and unable to move.
