Two divers had a lucky escape after they became stuck on a rock at the Whakatane Heads in high tide during bad weather.

Police said the pair were diving near Otarawairere Bay at the weekend when a rising swell trapped them on a rock.

Seargeant Denis Foster said the Whakatane Coastguard was not able to get close enough to the rock to pick-up the pair and an Inflatable rescue boat from the Ohope Surf Lifesaving club had to be used.

One of the divers was taken to hospital with advanced hypothermia. Police said the pair had a very lucky escape.
