Man dies, another loses leg in forestry accidents

A forestry worker has had his leg amputated below the knee in a workplace accident in the Far North.

The 29 year-old was working in Broadwood when the accident happened on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the man was flown to Whangerei Base Hospital and is in a stable condition.

On Monday, a 51-year-old man was killed in what appeared to be a workplace logging accident in Southland.

Police said Nicholas David McKenzie, from Tuatapere, was working on Young Road in Orepuki when the accident occurred about 5pm and he died at the scene.

A post-mortem was being completed on Tuesday and the death has been referred to the coroner.
