Matamata factory to close

3:56 pm on 14 August 2013

A Matamata factory that designs and manufactures mining and quarrying equipment is to close in December with the loss of 25 jobs.

The Barmac factory, a division of the global company Metso Minerals, specialises in a New Zealand invention, a vertical shaft impact crusher.

Four other people will continue to work for the company until the end of 2014 to pass on engineering knowledge.

Barmac spokesperson Keith Cooke said on Wednesday it made no sense to have a factory in New Zealand when most businesses are in the northern hemisphere and believes workers will be able to find employment elsewhere.

The factory will shut on 20 December.
