The chair of the Wellington Regional Council says local councils are spending too much money on their submissions on Wellington's supercity options.
Fran Wilde says about $2 million has been spent by councils as they prepare their submissions, which are due with the Local Government Commission on Friday.
All of the councils have done their own consultation, except for the regional and Porirua city councils, which set up and paid for a $300,000 independent panel.
Ms Wilde says a lot of money has been spent on consultants that weren't needed.
"Wairarapa's spent about seven hundred [thousand], and the Hutt Valley God knows what, because they've been advertising, they've run a huge advertising campaign in the Hutt News and they've had two reports I think.
"So a lot of money has gone in there and I think we probably could have done it better had we all agreed to get together and run an independent process."
The mayor of Carterton, Ron Mark, says the $780,000 the three Wairarapa councils have spent has been over three years and he's confident it's been spent wisely.
