Charges possible for officer in shooting, says lawyer

A lawyer says the officer who accidentally shot and critically injured a Hastings man could face a criminal prosecution.

An Armed Offenders Squad officer shot Iriheke Te Kanui Manu Pere, 33, in the back while he was lying face down on the ground, handcuffed.

Mr Pere remains in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit.

Auckland barrister Gary Gotlieb told Morning Report he would have expected a higher degree of weapons training for the police.

He says there's a possibility a charge of misusing a firearm could be laid but normally that would involve a member of the public, rather than a police officer on alert carrying out their job.
