Teams search for missing trampers

12:20 pm on 19 August 2013

Four trampers thought to be missing in North Canterbury are safe and well and are walking out of the mountain range they stayed in overnight.

Two Search and Rescue teams were sent into the Chest Peak area near Oxford on Monday morning to try to find the trampers who had not returned last night.

Search and Rescue co-ordinator Logan Penrose says the trampers have been in contact and are expected back by 5pm on Monday.

He says they got caught in a white-out on Sunday so decided to camp the night rather than continue walking and risk getting lost.

A police spokesperson says the trampers, aged in their thirties, are all locals.
